Thesis (Ph.D.)--Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion (Ohio), 2023.

This dissertation is a study of the use of foreign soldiers (mercenaries) in the military of ancient Judah during the late Iron Age (ca. 8th-6th cc. BCE) and how they were received in Judean society according to the Hebrew Bible. The archaeological and textual records suggest that Judah included Kushite and Aegean mercenaries in its military from the end of the 8th c. BCE until the beginning of the 6th c. BCE. Considering this practice, the biblical writers express certain attitudes towards the use of mercenaries. The attitudes are identified in passages that use the root רכש ," to hire", either to indicate a certain class of people in Judean society or mercenaries specifically. This dissertation then draws conclusions regarding the biblical attitudes towards the use of mercenaries in Judah's military within its cultural context.
