Thesis (Ph.D.)--Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, 2023.
Same Gender Loving Christian men have had a long history of being demonized in traditional, conservative, or fundamentalist American African church theologies. Within this church culture, there is an undeniable lineage of gay men in music ministry, yet no work has been done on how the theologies that emphasize human brokenness (Theologies of Brokenness) impact how these "gay singers" internalize the theologies that they sing and live (lyrical theologies). The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore the influence of lyrical theologies that emphasize brokenness on Same Gender Loving Christian men who grew up participating in music ministry in American African fundamentalist churches. It explores several over-arching questions. First, what are the Theologies of Brokenness that these men received during their formative years? How did they conceptualize and internalize these messages? What were the psychological, emotional, and behavioral effects of these messages? And finally, in what ways did they deconstruct and reconstruct these theologies? Participants (N=8) shared their experiences in semi-structured individual interviews that occurred via Zoom. Each interview was recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Analysis of the responses demonstrated that Theologies of Brokenness had negative and lasting psychological, emotional, and behavioral effects, resulting in low self-esteem, self-suppression, and unhealthy relationships. In the end, this research invites readers to critically engage their sung and lived lyrical theologies.
