Thesis (Ph.D.)--Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2023.
This dissertation seeks to make sense of the violence in MT Esther by recognizing it is a case of ḥerem application. The work reviews the various solutions that have been proposed for explaining the violence and discusses their limitations. Additionally, arguments that the violence is not serious on grounds either of its genre or doubts as to its historicity are reviewed and found to be unsatisfactory. The work then utilizes a legal reasoning approach to demonstrate the way MT Esther references Old Testament legal material and employs legal logic to apply the biblical concept of ḥerem to the conflict between Haman and the Jews. The dissertation concludes by considering how ḥerem changes the understanding of the violence and theology of MT Esther. Regarding the violence, it serves to contain it to Esther alone and frames it as God's judgment against Haman. Regarding the theology, the ḥerem reveals the covenantal faith of the Diasporic Jews as well as God's presence to His people through His law.
