Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 2023.
The Tiberian Masoretic studies have focused on the Aleppo Codex for its acclaimed superiority and the Leningrad Codex for its completeness. A general understanding of Tiberian Masorah including Masoretic terminology, functions, and placements, therefore, has mainly been established by the Masorahs of these two codices. However, an analytical study of the Masoretic notes in the Cairo Codex, the third principal Tiberian codex, reveals deviation from the practices of the Aleppo and Leningrad. This study aims to demonstrate not only the reasons for Cairo's divergence, but also the importance of the study of Cairo's Masorah to increase our understanding of the Tiberian Masorah as a whole.Based on a review of all 1,072 doublet catchwords in the Masorah Parva of the Cairo Codex, 131 doublet catchwords were selected for their prominent divergent characteristics and categorized into five areas. Analysis of these categories demonstrated that 1) the orthography of catchwords differs from the text; 2) the Masoretic term vahavero has multiple uses that were previously unknown; 3) the Mp and Mm notes function{A0}independently when they occur together; 4) Aramaic mnemonics appear in the side margins due to space constraints and numerous Masoretic notes; and 5) catchwords of both passages cited in the lemma verse challenge the conventional categorization of the Mp and Mm notes. The study's results indicate that Cairo's Masorah was written prior to the date that Ben Asher's Masorah was firmly established and became standardized as the Tiberian Masoretic tradition. Further, the numerous Masoretic notes and the use of popularized catchwords suggest that students of the Scripture were its audience rather than other Masoretes. Hence, the study of Cairo is essential to expand the current understanding of the Tiberian Masorah because of its divergence from the conformity of the other two codices.
