Thesis (Ph.D.)--Troy University, 2024.
This exploratory study highlighted the need for sexual health education for the college student athlete as an important piece of their overall wellness. There is minimal research in the area of examining the attitudes of coaches or social workers concerning STIs and sexual health education of student-athletes. The intersection of risk factors, age, socio-demographics, and access to health care education and services created the backdrop of questions used to survey coaches and social workers concerning their attitudes about aspects of sexual health education. While these two groups have different training and career paths, their attitudes concerning the need for sexual health education for the college student athlete showed minimal differences. As noted by the Center for Disease Control Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance (2020) STI's and STD's are still a top health risk worldwide. This fact complimented with who becomes infected (youth) at increasing higher rates should make sexual health education and services a priority for student athletes' well-being. Adding research to this topic and pushing forth and agenda of accurate information can create the necessary momentum to change the NCAA policy in the area of required services for overall student athlete wellbeing. Recommendations for implementation of sexual health education include making it mandatory, make it accessible, broad in scope, modern, and integrated with culturally appropriate peer support (Mowreader, 2023). This study affirms the need to emphasize sexual health education as a part of wellness education for the college student athlete as a key stakeholder for athletics departments and universities.
