Thesis (M.S.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 2024.
Chemical engines have been the main technology used to propel spacecraft in space since the beginning of space exploration. However, this option is not always the most favorable. A propulsion system based on electric propulsion makes it possible to reduce the required propellant mass at the expense of functioning for longer periods. Accordingly, the design of optimal trajectories that use low-thrust is more complex than the design of trajectories with near-impulsive maneuvers. The formulation of the problem consists of solving an optimal control problem, i.e., calculating the thrust control vector that maximizes a specific objective, e.g., the final mass of the spacecraft, subjected to some constraints. Various approaches can be used, but this thesis focuses on transcribing the problem into a nonlinear programming problem using a multiple shooting method. The optimal trajectory is then computed with an optimization solver that determines the value of the position, velocity, mass, integration time, and control vector at different points of the trajectory. This approach is applied to four mission scenarios to design optimal low-thrust trajectories to different bodies of the Solar System.
