Thesis (M.S.)--New York University Tandon School of Engineering, 2024.
The COVID-19 pandemic inspired new research around virtual fitness classes. Much of this research looks at the Zoom platform and its opportunities and limitations around social interactions between participants and instructors; however, there is still was and has been little research done or user testing performed around other platforms and supplemental plugins and apps that can be added to classes in real-time or in pre-recorded content. This project sought to develop a new approach to both teaching and learning in this space; titled Fitness Instructional Technology, FIT is the exploration and application of technology interventions on online fitness classes and teaching pedagogy. It includes AV innovations, multimedia applications and user-centric designs. It challenges current standards and models in the space, and pushes to define online fitness as a poignant modality unique to in-person experiences. The culmination of this research and user testing is realized through movewsarah.com, a virtual fitness studio and exercise library embodying the mission and principles of FIT. movewsarah.com has three facets: live streamed class content structured to include diverse engagement opportunities, pre-recorded content utilizing a video player design that captures multiple angles of an exercise, and multimedia resources to deepen one's understanding of the exercises they are performing.
