This document explores the realm of musical fusion where the aesthetics of Chinese and Western musical traditions converge, focusing on exceptional piano works by the distinguished contemporary Chinese-American composer Chen Yi. Emphasis will be on the musical culture of China as reflected in selected pieces, as well as their formal and pedagogical elements.{A0}Chapter 1 is a consideration of the characteristics of Chinese music with a brief history. Chapter 3 is an examination of six piano solo pieces leveled from late-intermediate to advanced in the following order: Two Chinese Bagatelles: Yu Diao and Small Beijing Gong, Bamboo Dance, Ji-Dong-Nuo, Variations on "Awariguli," and Duo Ye. Discussion of each piece includes a cultural and stylistic background, general form and structure, pedagogical notes, and a performance guide. The conclusion summarizes Chen Yi's compositional style and how she interweaves musical elements from China and the West.
