Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 2024.
This research delves into the lived experiences of individuals with mixed/multicultural backgrounds in the United States, spurred by the researcher's introspection during the COVID-19 pandemic and a personal journey navigating systemic oppression. Employing a hermeneutic phenomenological methodology, the study aims to not only elucidate the experiences of mixed/multicultural individuals through the medium of art-making but also to probe the researcher's own identity. The investigation centers on the transformative efficacy of art-making, with the objectives of addressing and mitigating anxiety and confusion, challenging prevailing power dynamics, establishing a sense of place and belonging, and fostering self-acceptance among those with mixed/multicultural identities. This exploration yields valuable insights into the intricate intersections of identity, lived experiences, and the therapeutic dimensions of artistic expression. The utilization of response art and epochs assisted myself as the researcher in navigating personal biases and beliefs, enabling me to bracket these factors aside to maintain curiosity and focus. This aspect of hermeneutic phenomenology contributes to a clear understanding of the interpretation of data that informs other scholars on the necessity of exploring their own experiences to uphold objectivity. Furthermore, this study invites fellow therapist-researchers to incorporate art as a tool for cultural humility practice and to explore shared intersections, not solely with participants but also with clients.
