Thesis (M.F.A.)--Indiana University, 2023.
This manuscript is a critical evaluation of how dramaturgs can use acting to increase dramaturgical agency in the new play development process. My study details a practice-based research project in which I simultaneously serve as a production dramaturg and actor in the development of Decolonizing Your Mind with Walter Mercado by Jayne Deely, an original play about queerness, race and gender identity. By putting my body on the stage, I examine how this embodied methodology may be a useful meaning-making system for dramaturgs. Furthermore, I explore how incorporating active dramaturgy enriches my practice not just as a dramaturg, but also as an actor. I bring together a variety of dramaturgy frameworks from dance, digital performance, and theatre fields, as well as the Viewpoints acting methodology, to argue that acting is an effective meaning-making tool and an embodied practice that can help dramaturgs reach a deeper understanding of the written text, performer agency, and creative collaboration.
