Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 2023.
This critical qualitative study will build a better understanding of rural Southeast English Language Teachers' (ELTs) lived experiences and amplify their stories. A particular focus was placed on how they negotiate state and administrative policy expectations while addressing Latino EL students' social and academic needs. The findings of this study were used locally and collaborated with the school and district administrative teams to support EL teachers and students. In terms of broader goals, this study was intended to document the social and linguistic injustices caused by the state of Georgia's dominant assimilative and subtractive educational policies. Finally, I desired to understand how EL teachers negotiate and meet Latino ELLs' academic and social needs. This dissertation provides an introduction and then a literature review that describes the macro, meso, and micro contexts of EL education in rural South Georgia. I emphasized research that addressed how EL teachers use their background experiences to negotiate their roles, responsibilities, and pedagogy in ESOL settings. I shared my participants' experiences through Clandinin and Connelly's past, present and future continuum.
