Thesis (D.N.P.)--University of Phoenix, 2024.
Obesity is a major health problem associated with inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption and physical inactivity. Trusted faith-based organizations have served as an effective resource for health promotion initiatives for weight management in African American communities. The DNP project used a prospective quasi-experimental pre-posttest design to implement a faith-based program to impact physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption within a church for African American adults both males and females, age 18 and older who identified as being overweight or obese in New Jersey. Ten (n=10) African American adults engaged in the Healthy Body, Healthy Spirit program. The results of the project were measured using the differences from pre and post-test results of questionnaires. Amid the six-week progression of the intervention, there was a 16% increase in the weekly serving of fruit and vegetable consumption and there was a 20% increase in the participants meeting the recommended physical activity level. Overall, the Healthy Body, Healthy Spirit intervention was found to be clinically significant. This DNP project showed that culturally appropriate care and tailored care could raise the level of knowledge surrounding the recommendation of physical activity and fruit and vegetables to assist with the reduction of obesity risk factors. The findings will inspire healthcare professionals such as community nurses, advanced practice nurses, and nursing leaders to continue to collaborate with trusted community settings to facilitate health promotion and primary care initiatives to improve population health and bring public awareness to the obesity epidemic.
