Thesis (Psy.D.)--Regent University, 2024.
This study investigates the role of curiosity in mitigating burnout, with a particular focus on the moderating effect of psychoanalytic education. While curiosity as a protective factor against burnout has been minimally explored in previous empirical studies (Garossa et al., 2017; Wang and Li, 2015), it has been hypothesized in psychoanalytic literature (Buechler, 2004; McWilliams, 2021). The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) and the Five-Dimensional Curiosity Scale Revised (5DCR) were administered to a sample of 66 psychoanalysts and 66 non-psychoanalysts. A hierarchical multiple regression revealed that psychoanalytic education moderated the relationship between curiosity and burnout, accounting for 4% of the variance in burnout. The inclusion of curiosity factors explained an additional 30.2% of the variance in burnout, after controlling for psychoanalytic education. Notably, psychoanalysts reported lower levels of burnout and higher levels of Joyous Exploration compared to their non-psychoanalytic counterparts. With curiosity having accounted for 30.2% of the variance in burnout, future implications include the importance of fostering an environment that encourages curiosity among patients, therapists, and employees.
