Thesis (D.Psych.)--Widener University, 2023.
In recent decades, research on posttraumatic growth (PTG) has proliferated, making this an important point of interest in the trauma field (Tedeschi et al., 2018). Taking the focus off the deleterious effects of trauma, this body of research emphasizes the growth that can come from the experience of trauma. However, there are important gaps in the research regarding complex childhood trauma and the potential illusory nature of self-reported PTG. Moreover, there is a divide between PTG research and relational psychoanalytic theory, where relational psychoanalytic theory is left generally absent from the dialogue. Due to the relational nature of complex trauma (Dagan & Yager, 2019), as well as a need for understanding the report of PTG as a potential psychological defense, relational psychoanalytic theory has much to offer to the realm of PTG research. Thus, this dissertation aims to conceptualize authentic growth after complex childhood trauma from a relational psychoanalytic standpoint; additionally, I aim to elucidate the nature of relational psychoanalytic therapy as a mechanism for growth after complex childhood trauma. To do so, the first chapter reviews the literature on PTG and current criticisms of this theory. In the second chapter, I review psychoanalytic concepts related to complex trauma and examine how growth after complex trauma is discussed in relational psychoanalytic literature. To illustrate these concepts, in chapter three, I summarize relational psychoanalytic case illustrations from the clinical literature and consider how growth after complex childhood trauma is attained and represented in these cases. Lastly, I discuss the importance of integrating relational psychoanalytic theory into the research on PTG after complex trauma, as represented through these case illustrations.
