Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Johannesburg (South Africa), 1987.
Within a revisionist theoretical framework of political socialization this Study investigates the processes of politica) socialization to which the Afrikaner student youth of South Africa 18 Subjected. It sets out to identify the major political socialization influences through which the political consciousness of these university students is formed. The revisionist framework implies an explicit rejection of the status quo bias dominant in so much of the research and theory of political socialization. Instead political socialization is viewed as a life-long interactive process of political learning which may entail not only the continuation of existing political attitudes, but may also foster progressive social and political change.Within this context the current study investigates the carly adult political socialization processes of these students. Particular attention is paid to the possibility of university attendence contributing to political resocialization, However, a much broader perspective than the university as = an "agent" or institution of political socialization is adopted. A point of departure in this study is that these processes of political socialization occur in unique socio-econemic and polbitical-historical circumstances -which will contribute tawards the formation of a particular kind of political consciousness.Special attention is focussed on the phase of early adult political socialization - as an optimum period for political change. So-called critical periods of political learning occur in this phase of the life-cycle. Period-effects and the formation of political generations also uniquely contribute to these processes of political socialization. The empirical part of this study comprises, mainly, a double panel study of Students of the Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesbury. Political socialization questionnaires were administered to these students in their first, second and third years at university. Potential chanyes in political attitudes were monitored in this way. Furthermore, the parents of one of these panels were included in the research design through a generational study, and in a cross-domain study the panel students were compared to small groups cf non-university-going youtns and students from tnree specific university majors. It was found that the university has a limited, although differential, Impact on the political socialization of these students. The so-callea "liberalization impact" of university seems to be limited to mainly a small number of social science courses. The formal and informal university influences predominantly contribute towards reinforcement of preceding and continued political socialization influences exerted by agents such as the parents and the school. The political socialization effect of political events in the case of these youths is mediated by mass media either directly or hegemonically controlled by the halders of political power. This means that traumatic events (potentially with a major political resocialization effect) being experienced by South African society are unlikely to affect the political consciousness of these youths. at this point in time. The major conclusion therefore was that the immediate potential for adult political resocialization of these Afrikaner student youths is severely restricted. Convergence and mutual reinforcement of political socialization influences ensure continuation of their political insulation.
