Academic delay of gratification (ADOG) refers to students' choice to postpone immediately available opportunities to satisfy impulses in favor of academic goals that are temporally remote but ostensibly more valuable. In Study 1 $(N=180)$ and Study 2 $(N=194),$ the Academic Delay of Gratification Scale (ADOGS) was developed and found to have acceptable psychometric properties. Study 3 $(N=369)$ tested the hypothesis that delay preference, as assessed by the ADOGS, would be related to students' motivational tendencies and use of learning strategies known to facilitate academic success. Results indicate that ADOG relates positively to students' course-specific academic motivation and use of resource management, as well as certain cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies. The implications of this study for learners and educators are discussed.
