Thesis (M.A.)--Indiana University, 2023.
This thesis argues that Rashid al-Din, the fourteenth-century Ilkhanid polymath was reading Firdawsi's eleventh-century Persian epic, the Shahnameh, and was using the Shahnameh in his composition of the Oghuznameh. Firdawsi's work served as a model for depicting transformation and change in Rashid al-Din's efforts to create a narrative that transcended its immediate temporal or geographic circumstances. I understand the Oghuznameh as a "radical revision" of Firdawsi's Alexander Romance, applying Su Fang Ng's analysis of the hybridity of the Alexander Romance as a text that could transform itself and has been transformed as a result of intercultural contacts.{A0}{A0}The Oghuznameh as well as the Shahnameh, place pre-Islamic Turkic, Mongol, and Iranian histories and myths in conversation with their Islamic counterparts through the prominence of symbols. In our case, these symbols are the protagonists, or heroes, of these narratives, Iskandar (Alexander) and Oghuz Khan. Much like the works themselves, the heroes tread the border between fiction and history and become embodiments of a fascinating dynamic between past and present.{A0}In my work, I use a mixture of close reading and analysis of literary and historical sources (both edited sources and manuscripts), translations, and brief analyses of paintings in illustrated manuscripts. A translation of the Oghuznameh based on the Persian edition and a British Library manuscript is appended to the thesis.{A0}
