At various points throughout France's history, French political discourse and laws have been notably critical of Islam and Muslims, as evident by President Macron's 2020 speech, "The Republic in action". Based on studies and research I've conducted between the United States of America, France, and Morocco, this thesis explores why the French government holds such a critical view of Islam and Muslims. I hypothesize that five key factors are involved: France's history with various organized religions, secularism, and laicite; Islam as defined by the West; France's colonial history in Algeria; French colonialism's relation to current French demographics; and recent jihadist terrorism in France. To demonstrate how these factors correspond to the French government's critical focus on Islam and Muslims, I'll be examining the impact of France's history with secularism, laicite, Islam, and Muslims on the French government's relationship with Islam and Muslims in 21st century France.
