This qualitative study was conducted to explore how school administrators involve parents in school safety policies and procedures. The research for this study was conducted over approximately four months in three high schools with high suspension rates in New York City Department of Education. There were 14 participants interviewed; Principals, assistant principals, parent coordinators and PTA Presidents. Each participant group was recruited from schools within the boroughs of New York City in Brooklyn, Bronx and Manhattan. Each interview was audio recorded and later transcribed. The interview results were used to answer the research questions. The research questions in the study were: 1. How do principals involve parents to develop an awareness of the code of conduct? 2. What strategies are used to increase knowledge of parents about the code of conduct? 3. What are the differences between administrative and parental understanding of the code of conduct as it is implemented in the school? The recommendations, procedures with results, and conclusions were derived from the findings of the research study. In sum, the findings were: Principals provided information about the code of conduct to parents; parent involvement increased after students violated the code of conduct; principals supported positive school culture to improve student outcome; school personnel used social emotional supports and parent outreach as prevention practices; parents and principals defined zero tolerance differently; the school and parents had a common understanding about the code of conduct; parents and school personnel believed academic progress was negatively impacted by student suspensions; and all participants supported suspensions when school safety was jeopardized. There were three conclusions in the study focused on principal strategies, principal actions to increase parental involvement and support for school safety measures. Principals provided the code of conduct to parents but did not involve them in implementing it. Strategies to increase parent knowledge about the code of conduct were limited to compliance mandates. Parents and administration had different definitions of zero tolerance as it related to the code of conduct, but all participants agreed that the code of conduct was an important safety measure. Key terms: Parent involvement, school-to-prison pipeline, cradle to prison pipeline, zero tolerance policy, suspensions, school safety.
