In a broad sense this dissertation addresses Russian memoir literature. In particular, it concentrates on the literary portraits of Leonid Andreev by Andrei Belyi, Aleksandr Blok, Kornei Chukovskii, Georgii Chulkov, Maksim Gor'kii, Nikolai Teleshov, Boris Zaitsev and Evgenii Zamiatin, which form A Book About Leonid Andreev (Kniga o Leonide Andreeve. Berlin: 1922). The eight memoirs can be divided into two categories: biographical and psychological. The biographical make specific and often subjective claims about Andreev for the historical record. Zaitsev offers a model for interpreting Andreev's life; Belyi claims that Andreev was an unwitting quasi-Symbolist and Teleshov argues that Andreev's involvement in the Sreda literary circle was important because of the bonds of friendship it fostered. The psychological examine Andreev's mental condition. Looking through the prism of the literary portrait, a diagnosis of bipolar illness, also known as manic-depression, is made. Of interest is how this illness was described in the portraits at a time when little was known about mental illness. Chukovskii associates Andreev's manic periods with creative energy; Chulkov argues that his "inner turmoil" reflected the social and historical upheaval of the time; Blok claims that they had a special connection based on "chaos" and Gor'kii discounts Andreev's illness, suggesting that Andreev himself was guilty of wasting his natural talent on alcohol, laziness and disruptive behavior. These portraits have led to various (mis-) readings of Andreev which have been repeated and accepted into his biography, Understanding the demands of manic-depression as well as addressing certain biographical claims results in a re-examination of Andreev's life history and opens new perspectives on his literary works. This dissertation shows that what was written after Andreev's death and how we read (or reread) this literature is just as important for the recouping of Andreev's legacy as the recovery of published and unpublished documents. This is the first comprehensive and critical look at the memoir literature devoted to Andreev as well as the first to make a diagnosis of bipolar illness.
