Thesis (M.F.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2020.
The spectacular progress of modern technologies, from television to the internet, has changed people's lives. With the presence of more and more virtual characters, such as virtual signers, virtual models and virtual YouTubers, a younger generation has begun to worship these virtual characters as idols. Fans follow their idols on social media, attend their concerts and buy related branded merchandise. Moreover, many fans, including adults, fall in love with these virtual characters as fans search for connection, companionship and even intimacy. In the extreme, some fans believe these virtual characters are real and, extraordinarily, even marry virtual love interests as replacements of real-life interactions and relationships. So-called Otaku in Japan and China, these extreme fans are indulging not only in an online virtual world but also hope for a virtually spiritual experience, likely to cause negative effects on their emotional life and behaviors. Undoubtedly, these virtual characters are a new, problematic and far-reaching form of media. By understanding human behavior through interviews and observations, designers can better understand the psychological profile of fans and fan culture. That done, designers can then design virtual worlds that help fans build healthy relationships with not only idols but also their very own community while promoting social development and wellbeing.
