Internationalization provides both opportunities and threats for SMEs, and their presence in the global scope has gained widespread attention in the literature. Many SMEs have realized they have a level of business agility, adaptation ability, and innovative capability that help them diversify internationally and increase their performance. However, these internationalizing SMEs should also compete with well-established multinational enterprises (MNEs) with the most significant market share and complementary resources in their home and foreign market. Despite the vital role of SMEs in fueling economic growth, little advice is available to them in terms of the effect of internationalization on their performance and the internal and external factors that may influence their survival in the foreign market.Building on existing theoretical frameworks, including resource-based view (RBV), organizational learning theory, and business network approach, this study developed a conceptual model to explain the relationship between internationalization and financial and non-financial performance of SMEs. The aim was to help them identify the key factors that affect their internationalization strategy and performance. The study took the point of view of SMEs and proposed a moderated mediation model by considering open innovation as a mediator effect and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) as an important contingency of the mediation effect. The study used the quantitative approach, and the data was collected by using the survey method and designing the semi-structured questionnaire. The data was analyzed by using Structural Equation Modeling- AMOS to test the hypotheses. The moderated mediation effect was tested using a sample of 201 internationalizing SMEs in the UK, as they play a crucial role in the UK economy and economic development. The study examined the direct and indirect effect of the degree of internationalization on firm performance through coupled open innovation in the context of UK SMEs. It confirmed that the degree of internationalization is positively related to firm performance. In addition, the results indicated that open innovation partially mediates this relationship. The study also investigated the moderating effect of entrepreneurial orientation on this relationship. Contrary to the study's hypothesis, the results revealed that the impact of SMEs internationalization on open innovation is weaker at a high level of entrepreneurial orientation than when it is at a lower level. Additionally, a high level of entrepreneurial orientation weakens the mediating effect of open innovation on the degree of internationalization-firm performance relationship.
