Gender stereotypes continue to play a role in the advancement of women in the workplace. The aim of this study was to identify the underlying cognitive processing involved with the observations of leader behavior that were either congruent or incongruent with the leader gender stereotypes of Agency and Communality. To identify these cognitive processes, electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded from 56 participants. Based on the extant literature on expectancy violations, the study expected to find increased amplitude in the P300 and N400 event-related potential (ERP) components at central and parietal locations as an indication of context updating and increased cognitive load. The study design included 4 priming conditions based on Leader Gender and Trait (Female/Agentic, Female/Communal, Male/Agentic, Male Communal) operationalized as transcripts of senior leadership team meetings. Photographs of the leader exhibiting the body language and gender of the priming condition was included with the transcripts. EEGs were recorded during the test phase of the study while participants were presented with a series of neutral expression facial images of the leader from the priming condition as well as two random unprimed neutral faces. No ERPs were able to be extracted due to excessive signal noise associated with the dry electrode system used in the study. A fast-fourier transformation (FFT) was used to convert the raw EEG data from the time domain into the frequency domain. This resulted in a significant main effect for gender in the beta-band at the Cz scalp location as well as a significant interaction effect of Leader Gender and Trait in the beta-band at the P3 scalp location. As expected, neural activity did not correlate with a self- report gender leader behavior expectation measure.
