Thesis (M.A.)--Tufts University, 2024.
This study aimed to assess whether maternal depression, reported when children were approximately five years old, was associated with children's later academic performance in third grade (aged 8-9). It also aimed to test whether the self-reported social support that mothers received when their children were five years old acted as a protective factor in buffering the effects of maternal depression on the children's later academic performance. The current study used secondary data from an evaluation of a home-visiting program for first-time parents in Massachusetts. Maternal depression was measured through self-report scales, while children's math and English language arts scores were measured by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Utilizing correlation, independent samples t-test, and moderation model, the study found no significant impact of maternal depression on children's math and ELA scores, nor did social support moderate this relation, challenging prior assumptions about maternal depression's effects on academic outcomes.
