Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northern Arizona University, 2024.
This study investigated how English language writers in a Chinese university were able to paraphrase following instruction with an online module. Participants were separated into two groups: Group A (Individuals) and Group B (Dyads). They were then trained and assessed in their ability to complete paraphrasing tasks with a pre and posttest. Prewriting collaboration between the dyads was collected and measured through participant notes and responses. Participants completed questionnaires after the training and posttests. All participants improved significantly from the use of the paraphrasing strategy. No significant difference (p = 0.337, 0.646, 0.509) was found between mean scores from the Training task and the Post task. This suggests that participants were able to produce more complete paraphrases than in the Pre task using the RAIWC strategy even without the step-by-step guidance that they had received in the training modules.
