Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Alabama, 2023.
The media has a proven history of providing audiences with crucial information in perilous times. However, the media seemingly fractured during the major public health crisis, COVID-19, in the United States. This study seeks to find the potential polarization of two different media styles, liberal- and conservative-leaning, by content analyzing four media sources - MSNBC, USA Today, Fox News, and The Daily Caller - to compare COVID-19 attribute saliency during a seven-month period under two different administrations. All news articles and transcripts were collected from the NexisUni database using specific words and phrases. It was then investigated whether the media sources had the attributes present and the sentiment of the article or transcript when discussing the virus or the administrations' responses and then compared the outlets to each other. The findings show that the media's political tendency affects the saliency and sentiment of the attribute.
