Settling of marine organisms on ships can cause biofouling, leading to undesired consequences. Fouling-release coatings are a promising approach to avoid biofouling. Today's commercial fouling-release coatings are mainly based on silicone elastomers, which are not ideal for slime release, and the coating is very soft. Robust coatings with excellent biofouling release performance are needed. To achieve such a goal, self-stratified, amphiphilic, robust glycidyl-carbamate (GC)-based coatings with good fouling-release properties were explored. Several factors influence coatings performance, including the molecular weight of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly (dimethyl siloxane) PDMS moieties, the ratio of hydrophobic (PDMS) and hydrophilic (PEG) components in the system, and the effect of different amine curing agent.
