Thesis (Ph.D.)--Tennessee Technological University, 2024.
This research examined, through the voices of rural librarians, the challenges, opportunities, and circumstances that guide and shape the role of the individuals who work in public libraries. Centering on the voices of rural librarians, the researcher investigated their experiences and discovered some of the underlying reasons and factors that contributed to how they influence the community. Through the methodology and framework of portraiture, this study illuminates the collective story of five rural librarians and the communities they serve.Data for this study included interviews, observations, artifacts, and daily reflective notes. Using a narrative approach and voice as autobiography, composite portraits were created through the experience of participants intertwined with the researcher's knowledge as Director of a library. These portraits identified ways librarians influence communities through their work and the role funding plays in libraries in rural Tennessee. Participants revealed their perseverance as they described their response to rural communities through the services and resources provided and the influence of their work despite funding issues.Empirical research on the value and influence of rural libraries is needed to broaden understanding of the ways libraries function as anchor institutions in their communities as well as the significant work being done by librarians. Rural communities benefit from many of the resources and services provided by their local libraries through the pursuits of librarians. Librarians and library administrators who are struggling with the need to demonstrate their value to stakeholders, funding bodies, and their communities will potentially find this research of interest.{A0}
