In the past, theories of leadership were based primarily on models developed by men from studies of men and the results generalized to include women. Feminist scholars assert that research on leadership often overlooked women or distorted the portrayal of them resulting in imprecise, inaccurate, and imbalanced theories. Recently, feminist scholars began to reconceptualize ideas about leadership in order to include a female perspective. The younger branch of the Women's Movement of the 1960's provided the major impetus for the feminist reconceptualization of leadership. Although fluid and subject to modification, the major components of feminist leadership are: (a) non-hierarchical and participatory organizational structures and the use of consensus decision-making; (b) reconceptualization of the traditional meanings of power; (c) skills and information sharing; (d) established internal procedures for handling conflict; (e) a supportive work environment; and (f) a commitment to diversity in the workplace. The purpose of this study was to discover whether major components of feminist leadership were practiced in university women's centers and women's studies programs in order to confirm and clarify feminist leadership. Each group was mailed a questionnaire developed by the author which assessed the existence of feminist leadership and the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument which assessed individual leader behavior in conflict situations. The results of this study confirmed the presence of some components of feminist leadership, but not others. A major finding was that a large majority of women's centers and women's studies programs used consensus decision-making. Another finding was that responsibility for developing and approving programs and services, curriculum, and policies were shared by persons in addition to the director and/or administrator. There was preliminary evidence that race/ethnicity was a high priority in staffing, programs/services and curriculum, and policy formulation. Since this study was preliminary in nature, more research on feminist leadership is needed. Instruments should be developed in order to more adequately assess each component of feminist leadership. Research on this topic can significantly add to the increasing body of knowledge on women and leadership and increase our understanding of the contribution of feminism to another important aspect of human existence.
