This study examines in depth the first historical phase of the American-Hebrew-Language press, 1871-1914. Based mainly upon the 46 American-Hebrew periodicals of this period, this research investigates the unique role of this press within the larger framework of the American-Jewish press, despite its journalistic weaknesses and short duration. The study finds that most of this press could be considered--at least till 1909--as the "American branch" of the European Hebrew Enlightenment ("Haskalah") press. But its uniqueness lies in changing the concept of the educational-pedagogical ethos, as well as shifting the centrality of this ethos to a more marginal role within the American-Hebrew-Jewish agenda. The publications of the press consisted mainly of monthlies and weeklies, with only a single daily,and they represented primarily Zionist and Jewish national trends (43.5%), together with Cultural-Literary ones (19.6%). Its strongly Jewish nature is indicated in the fact that 92.8% of the editorials of the main periodicals dealt with Jewish subjects--of them 72.8% dealt exclusively with American-Jewish themes--while only 7.2% dealt with non-Jewish topics. These findings show that the press can be considered as an integral part of the American multi-ethnic press--a dimension neglected by most other studies of this press. The second section of this study discusses the attitude of the press towards the process of "Americanization", which was centered around the crucial issue of the struggle between acculturation and Jewish ethnic maintenance. By expressing mainly a positive attitude towards American life and values, along with the encouragement of adjustment and acculturation, the press showed its positive function in the process of "Americanization". But on the other hand the press, by emphasizing its Jewish-ethnic role, also fought against the negative results of "Americanization", namely assimilation, calling for the maintenance of the Hebrew and the Jewish identity of the immigrants. The vitality of the press is shown by the fact that it did not aim at Jewish isolation from but rather at a Jewish ethnic participation in the American society.
