This qualitative study explores the process by which pre-doctoral psychology interns develop the confidence and skills necessary to work with religious and spiritual dimensions of clients within the context of therapy. A phenomenological approach was used for this research and individual interviews were conducted with ten pre-doctoral interns completing internships at APA-accredited college counseling centers. During content analysis of interview data, four common overarching themes emerged which reflected experiences that had had a significant impact on interns' comfort level and skill development. These themes included (1) self-awareness, (2) theoretical orientation, (3) training, and (4) personal experiences. Results of this study suggest that the process of developing skills and confidence to work with issues of diversity, and specifically religion and spirituality, is complex and dynamic. Not only does this process entail a commitment on the part of the therapist-in-training to develop self-awareness and a evidenced-based psychotherapy skills, the process also calls for training programs, internship sites, and the larger field of psychology to continue to recognize religion, spirituality, and explicit views of world and self as important aspects of diversity. Suggestions for training programs are discussed.
