The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects on counselor trainees' levels of anxiety, self-efficacy and basic skill competency utilizing Gestalt Awareness Training and REBT Video Training modules during counseling practicum orientation. The three dependent variables examined were state and trait anxiety, social and general self-efficacy, and basic counseling skill competency. A quasi-experimental two-group research study was conducted with master-level students from a CACREP-accredited Counselor Education Program at a large Midwestern university during two consecutive semesters. A total of 39 counseling practicum master-level trainees, 10 advanced degree supervisors and two independent raters participated. The data included pre/post measures of the dependent variables. The dependent variables were scores on the counselor trainees' state and trait anxiety levels (State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, STAI, Form Y, Spielberger et al., 1983), social and general self-efficacy (Self-Efficacy Scale, SES, Sherer et al., 1982), and basic counseling skill competency as measured by the Evaluation of Counselor Behaviors (ECB short form, Bernard, 1981) and Basic Skills Observation (BSO, Ellington, 1991) forms. The independent variable was assignment to one of the two treatment modules, Gestalt Awareness Training or REBT Video Training. This study posited providing a Gestalt Awareness Training Module or REBT Video Training Module for practicum counselor trainees before they saw their first client would ease the counselor trainees' initial anticipatory anxiety. Helping to decrease the counselor trainee's anxiety was expected to increase self-efficacy and allow the basic counseling skill competency of the counselor trainee to increase. This study hypothesized there would be statistically significant differences for these dependent variables between counselor trainees who received the Gestalt Awareness Training Module as compared to those who received the REBT Video Training Module.
