Much has been written about the use of cognitive- and behavior-based therapies in treating individuals who self-harm, but little has been written on the application of depth psychology to understand how self-harm serves individuals. Using hermeneutic and heuristic methodologies, this thesis explores self-harm as a form of religious devotion, as an archetype, as attempted self-initiation, and as symbolism that evokes release and relief. Psychological and anthropological literature as well as some experiences of the author are used to show how multiple functions of self-harm may drive behavior in groups of people who are systematically disempowered in American society and culture. A depth psychological approach with elements of humanistic-existential therapy is presented as a way to interpret soul-needs that are expressed through self-harm.
