Grief affects every person at some point in their life. In its severe form, known as complicated grief (CG), it has been deemed a health hazard with potentially life-threating implications. Current grief-related diagnoses and treatment models have been found to be lacking, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) which is presently recognized as the most efficacious model for grief treatment. CBT for the treatment of grief and CG has been aimed primarily at ameliorating symptomology. However, literature suggests CBT alone offers incomplete treatment for many who struggle with grief. The present paper proposed the development of an integrative psychotherapy treatment model integrating CBT with elements of Narrative Therapy (NT) in a meaning making framework that supports spirituality. The goal of this model was to offer an alternative grief treatment aimed at facilitating the grieving process and expanding grief treatment options to help more people, specifically at-risk populations such as adult females with CG. This study applied the Developmental Research and Utilization (DRU) Model for the creation of a workbook for clients struggling with grief (with focus on adult females with CG) to be used within the individual psychotherapy counseling setting.
