Thesis (D.P.T.)--California State University, Fresno, 2024.
Objective: This study surveyed 12-18 year old high school adolescent female swimmers pre- to postseason on measures of injuries, mindfulness, and competitive state anxiety. Methods: Twenty-three swimmers completed postseason data collection from 2 high schools in Clovis, California. Swimmers and their guardians signed a consent form before participating, then swimmers completed an intake form and completed the 12-question Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale-Revised (CAMS-R) and the 17-question Revised Competitive State Anxiety Index (CSAI2R) both at preseason and postseason. Finally, the intake form was updated to account for any new injuries reported at the end of the swim season. Results: Correlations were found between mindfulness, competitive state somatic anxiety, and competitive state cognitive anxiety at different time points throughout the season. There was a significant decrease in somatic anxiety from preseason to postseason. Conclusion: The results only found significance between competitive state anxiety and mindfulness. No significant relationship was found between competitive state anxiety and injury or mindfulness and injury. More research should be conducted with more participants to adequately examine the relationship between these variables.
