Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2024.
There is a lack of information available on therapists' perspectives on providing psychotherapy to clients who are undergoing or have undergone ketamine treatments for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). A phenomenological approach was used in this study to describe the experiences of 10 therapists who have integrated clients' experiences of ketamine treatments for TRD into their practice of relational Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Key findings indicated value in combining Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) and EFT because clients often had significant breakthroughs, and the importance of being as prepared as possible with both KAP and EFT training. Also, participants revealed several common struggles including how to educate clients, working with providers of ketamine, timing of treatments, dosing inconsistencies, varying results, logistics, fears of working outside their scope of practice, personal blocks, and negative impressions from colleagues.
