Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2023.
Online therapy is increasingly becoming a common vehicle for receiving mental health treatment (Novotney, 2017). With its relatively low barriers to access compared to in-person therapy and cost-effectiveness, online forms of treatment for psychological issues have the potential to become an innovative resource for underserved populations (Franciosi et al., 2021). As with traditional therapy, however, practitioners have an obligation to create culturally competent interventions in online formats. Therefore, a literature review of online CBT treatments for depression, including those that have been culturally adapted for Latinx adults (age 18+) will be presented. There is a responsibility to investigate this topic in that several major online depression interventions have been found to be effective for the general population, however, the impact of such interventions on the U.S. Latinx community is largely unknown. Furthermore, recent research has demonstrated initial promising findings for two major online treatments, Deprexis and Moodgym, tailored to diverse cultural groups. Given the prevalence of depression amongst the growing Latinx community in the U.S., it is imperative to explore the potential generalizability of this success to this population. Thus, the first aim of this study is to create a culturally adapted online CBT treatment manual for U.S. Latinx adults with depression. The second aim is to have the manual evaluated for its feasibility by experts in the mental health field.
