This study sought to determine if there is a relationship between anxiety and depression in people with chronic headaches and caregiver burden in their support person using a biopsychosocial framework. Data was collected from dyads, which included one participant with a diagnosed chronic headache disorder and one participant who identified as the informal caregiver, or support person, of the participant with chronic headaches. Online surveys were distributed through pain management clinics, headache clinics and groups, caregiver groups, and headache groups on social media, including Reddit and Facebook. All participants were asked demographic information. The participants with chronic headaches were requested to fill out the Generalized Anxiety Disorder - 7 (GAD-7) and the Beck Depression Inventory - II (BDI-II). The participants identified as the support person were requested to fill out the Zarit Burden Inventory (ZBI). Data collected from dyads was kept paired through assigned identification numbers. Scores on the GAD-7 and BDI-II were correlated with scores on the ZBI. Overall there was no significant correlation between BDI-II scores and ZBI scores. There was a significant positive correlation between GAD-7 scores and ZBI scores, where participants with chronic headaches who had higher anxiety scores had a support person with higher burden scores. Further subset analyses found relationships based on certain demographic variables including younger age, type of headache, duration of headache, duration of support, and education level. This is somewhat consistent with similar existing literature, however demonstrates a need for additional investigation into the biopsychosocial factors involved in these dyad relationships.
