Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Alabama, 2023.
Theories of psychopathy development have emphasized that individuals high in psychopathy experience diminished anxiety and sadness. However, findings for relationships between psychopathy and internalizing problems (i.e., anxiety and depression) in the empirical literature have been mixed, and a variety of studies find null or even positive relationships between psychopathy and internalizing symptoms. The current meta-analysis aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of heterogeneity in psychopathy and internalizing relationships through examining measurement and sample-related variables that may moderate these associations (e.g., psychopathy subdimensions assessed, different measures of psychopathy and internalizing, and demographic characteristics). Results suggested that psychopathy demonstrates a small, positive overall association with internalizing problems (r = .08), which may signify that psychopathy truly demonstrates a weak association with internalizing and is unrelated to abnormalities in subjective emotional experience (e.g., low anxiety/fear). Alternately, the current study suggested that a weak overall relationship between psychopathy and internalizing could also arise due to variability in how psychopathy facets relate to internalizing and differences in how psychopathy and internalizing are operationalized across measures. Most notably, results indicated that some psychopathy scales may contain content that cleanly captures both psychopathy and low internalizing distress whereas other psychopathy scales may inadvertently capture internalizing symptoms in addition to psychopathic traits. Findings from the current meta-analysis may inform future efforts to understand how measurement-related considerations influence relationships between psychopathy and internalizing problems.
