Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Kansas, 2023.
Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), the first female composer who won the Prix de Rome, achieved recognition at the age of 24. The salon culture in France provided Boulanger with opportunities to have her own compositions heard and performed in a male-dominated field, which helped to establish her reputation as a composer and connect her with other diverse background musicians and composers. Because during her time, female composers were not given the same recognition and opportunities as their male counterparts. Works written by female composers brought attention to the community of French musicians and composers of the early twentieth century. By acknowledging her gender, it highlights the challenges she faced as a woman in the industry and the significance of her accomplishments. This success also helps to bring attention to the historical inequalities and biases that existed in the classical music world and how they have affected the representation and recognition of female composers throughout history. The French salon culture had a considerable influence on Boulanger's piano works. This document is a celebration, and a survey of Boulanger's short musical career by illustrating her complete solo piano works: Prelude en Re♭, Trois Morceaux Pour Piano, and Theme et Variations. The goal of this dissertation is to offer a deeper understanding of Boulanger's creative process and offer insights into the cultural and historical context in which her music was produced. By exploring the influence of French salon traditions on her piano works, one can gain a greater appreciation for Boulanger's unique voice as a woman composer.
