Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Stony Brook, 2023.
This dissertation examines the ways in which domestically produced and consumed photographies (including snapshot photographs, family albums, slide shows, and the commercial and editorial images found in popular picture magazines) manifest themselves in photo-based or photo-influenced public works and exhibitions in the late 1950s. Particular attention will be placed on Charles and Ray Eames' Glimpses of the USA, a projected multi-screen work made up of over 2,200 (mostly) still images shown at the American National Exhibition in Moscow (ANEM) in 1959. Other works-to be used as points of comparison or departure-include Robert Frank's The Americans (first published in France in 1958 and in the U.S. a year later), and Edward Steichen's The Family of Man (first shown at MoMA in New York in 1955). More broadly, this dissertation shows how vernacular photographic practices and forms of consumption contributed to the postwar American suburban imaginary.
