This doctoral thesis examines the relationship between the characteristics of financing contracts and contracts' portfolio diversification with banks' performance by using data of Islamic banks. Islamic banks use a variety of financing contracts based on Islamic finance principles. Some of the contracts are debt based similar to conventional banks and some are equity based similar to a private equity fund and therefore, Islamic banks are a combination of conventional banks and private equity. Diversity literature in banking deals in general with loan portfolio diversification by sectors and geographical exposure and diversification of banks' income without referring to financing basis (debt versus equity). In addition, financing contracts portfolio diversification in Islamic banking literature is in the theoretical level. This proposed research deals with financing contracts diversification and different financing basis debt / equity empirically within the Islamic banking system. The second chapter documents six main financing contracts in Islamic banking, which fall into three categories: sales contracts, leasing and partnership contracts. Selling and leasing contracts are debt based and partnership contracts are equity based. Contracts differ in terms of the types of risk, cost, process performance, complexity, constraints, transaction costs, cash flow, time frame, asset classes VII and sectors. Differences in the characteristics of the various contracts and contracts' portfolio diversification should affect the bank's performance depending on the degree of exposure to the types of contracts. By using different diversification indices and performance measures and estimating panel data regression model in Chapter 3 based on a sample of 106 commercial Islamic banks from 24 countries for the period 2000-2012, it can be shown that the differences between the various contracts are reflected in the performance of different contracts' portfolio composition. Performance of more diversified portfolios is better than less diversified portfolios especially in profitability, credit risk and efficiency. On the other hand, performance of less diversified portfolios is better in stability. There are differences in performance between the various contracts of debt based category and differences between the various contracts of equity based category. Also, there are differences in performance between debt contracts versus equity contracts. According to the findings and comparison of various contracts, it can be concluded that some contracts are outperformed in specific areas and less in other areas. Regarding debt versus equity based, the results are not unambiguous. Portfolio with a combination of some of debt based and equity based contracts should lead to an enhancement in the performance of the portfolio. Leasing contract which is debt based outperformed by most of performance measures. According to performance measures, recent financial crisis (07-09) effected Islamic Banks' performance negatively especially in profitability, credit risk and stability An analysis of financing contracts portfolios of Islamic banks in the first section of Chapter 4 shows that there are differences between different banks and different countries in terms of portfolio composition when debt contracts are the main ingredient in the composition of the portfolio and a growing trend of portfolio diversification in recent years. Also, it has been found that more capitalized banks have more diversified portfolio and there is a tradeoff between financial investments and financing contracts portfolio diversification.

520 $a עבודת הדוקטורט בוחנת את הקשר בין המאפיינים של חוזי מימון וגיוון תיק החוזים לבין ביצועי הבנקים ע"י שימוש בנתונים של בנקים אסלאמיים. בנקים אסלאמיים משתמשים במגוון חוזי מימון שונים המבוססים על עקרונות המימון האסלאמי. חלק מהחוזים הוא על בסיס חוב בדומה לבנקים רגילים וחלקם האחר על בסיס הון בדומה לקרן השקעות פרטיות ועל כן, בנקים אסלאמיים מהווים שילוב של בנקים רגילים וקרן השקעות פרטיות.הספרות המקצועית בתחום הגיוון בבנקאות עוסקת באופן כללי בגיוון תיקי אשראי לפי סקטורים וחשיפה גיאוגרפית וגיוון בהכנסות הבנקים ללא התייחסות לבסיס מימון )חוב לעומת הון(. בנוסף, גיוון חוזי מימון בבנקאות האסלאמית הינו ברמה התיאורטית. מחקר זה עוסק בגיוון חוזי מימון ובבסיס המימון חוב / הון באופן אמפירי במערכת הבנקאית האסלאמית.בפרק השני נמצא כי קיימים ששה חוזי מימון עיקריים בבנקאות האסלאמית אשר מתחלקים לשלוש קטיגוריות: חוזי מכירה, חוזה החכרה וחוזי שותפות. חוזי המכירה והחכרה הינם על בסיס חוב וחוזי שותפות הם על בסיס הון. החוזים נבדלים מבחינת סוגי הסיכונים, בעלות, תהליכי ביצוע, מורכבות, מגבלות, סיכונים, עלויות עסקה, תזרים, טווחי זמן, סוגי נכסים וסקטורים. ההבדלים במאפיינים בין החוזים השונים וגיוון תיק החוזים אמור להשפיע על ביצועי הבנק בהתאם למידת החשיפה שלו לסוגי החוזים. על ידי שימוש במדדי גיוון, מדדי ביצוע שונים ואמידת מודל רגרסיה של נתוני פאנל בפרק 3 שמתבססים על מדגם של 106 בנקים מ- 24 מדינות לתקופה 2012-2000 ,נמצא כי ההבדלים בין החוזים השונים משתקפים בביצועים של הרכבי תיק חוזים שונים. ביצועים של תיקים מגוונים יותר טובים יותר לעומת תיקים פחות מגוונים בתחום הרווחיות, סיכון אשראי ויעילות ופחות בתחום היציבות. קיימים הבדלים מבחינת הביצועים בין החוזים השונים בקטיגורית החוזים שהם על בסיס חוב וגם בקטיגורית החוזים שהם על בסיס חוב. כמו כן, קיימים הבדלים בין החוזים השונים בין שתי הקטיגוריות חוב לעומת הון. עפ"י הממצאים שהתקבלו והשוואה בין החוזים השונים, ניתן להסיק כי לחלק מהחוזים ביצועים טובים יותר בתחומים מסוימים ופחות בתחומים אחרים. בנוסף, אין יתרון מוחלט מבחינת בסיס המימון חוב.
