Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of St. Thomas (Minnesota), 2007.
Successful entrepreneurship requires many resources: bright ideas; various skill and experience sets; and of course, money. However, in pursuit of business achievement entrepreneurs often forget or neglect personal networking, or the social connections which often make the difference between failure and exponential growth. Focused mainly on garnering investment dollars which seem ever elusive, entrepreneurs often struggle to find necessary partners at this most important stage of business development. This research concentrates on early stage private equity investors, commonly referred to on business circles as "angel" investors to explore how entrepreneurs must navigate their way into and through social networks to capture the investment necessary for significant growth. The work relied on individual interviews with 11 angel investment community leaders from within a single market in the upper Midwest. The data provided the basis for a number of new conclusions about: angel motivations beyond increases in capital; angel status and social strata; and functions of angel networks. The central premise of these analyses revolved around the overlay of Trobriand Kula Ring gift exchanges from Marcel Mauss, in conjunction with interaction ritual chains from Erving Goffman and Randall Collins. Analysis of the data eventually led to identification of angel investors as belonging to one of three, newly identified classes of angel investors: Cherbim, Seraphim and Archangels. The study participants, as Archangels, represent leaders in the investment community and critical nexus players in the social network of angels and entrepreneurs.
