Thesis (M.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2023.
This thesis comprises three chapters, each of which discuss how female buddy films in recent years have contributed to queering notions of female friendship, time and space. I use three films as my primary sources, which are Booksmart (2019), Unpregnant (2020) and Plan B (2021). Chapter One analyzes how the female buddies restructure their social hierarchies to prioritize female friendship and learn to attach meaning to their experiences through their female friendships using the buddy journey. Chapter Two analyzes how the female buddies queer time by embracing the fluidity of adolescence and developing new markers of adulthood outside the conventional, linear interpretation of time. Chapter Three analyzes how female buddies queer space by both using and influencing space through queer film settings and the negotiation of their personal identities as well as the buddy friendship. These analyses demonstrate models of female friendships on-screen that can be applied to female friendships off-screen to create stronger, healthier female social bonds and embrace the queer nature of intimate, non-sexual relationships.
