The Dark Triad is a constellation of three personality traits-narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. People who possess the Dark Triad are characterized by dishonesty, disagreeableness, callousness, duplicity, and aggressiveness. Although the extant research has demonstrated a higher prevalence of the Dark Triad in men, this research is focused solely on women. Attachment theory suggests that the bond between an infant and their primary caregiver is the foundation of the person's means of interactions in future relationships as an adult. Specifically, the quality of this early bond determines whether or not their attachment to others will be secure. With the interpersonal difficulties often seen in persons who possess the Dark Triad, it was hypothesized that persons who endorse the Dark Triad will be characterized by an insecure attachment style: either attachment anxiety or attachment avoidance. This study found a positive relationship between the Dark Triad and attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were supported. Dark Triad traits were not found to have a negative relationship to secure attachment, as was hypothesized. Observing ego, one's ability to self-monitor in the present, was also being considered in this study as a mediator variable. It was hypothesized and supported that Observing Ego mediates the relationship between the Dark Triad and both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. These findings may assist both clinicians and clients in understanding etiology and development of adverse traits as well as the capacity for self-observation of the manifestations of the traits, ultimately informing treatment approaches.
