Thesis (Ph.D.)--Nova Southeastern University, 2023.
As digital psychotherapy guides second order change by exploding in new directions due to client demand and rolling advancements in mobile technologies, creative technology-mediated interventions are crucial to ground effective practice. Creative digital adaptations of evidence-based psychotherapy interventions, as well as original technology-mediated approaches were examined in this interpretive phenomenological study to explore how clinicians are ushering systemic psychotherapy into the digital landscape. The novel results of this study indicate that systemic psychotherapists who adopt technologies early identify as artists, musicians and/or creative individuals who value aesthetics and perceive technology as inspiration for therapeutic gain. These creative therapists also encourage client creativity and track creative developments in the field. Additionally, therapeutic model, epistemology and personal preferences fuel selection of creative digital technology approaches, with decolonization and spirituality supporting these themes. This research also validates existing literature on the convenience of virtual therapy. The findings in this study contribute to the emergent evidence base of creative technology-mediated interventions in the systemic digital psychotherapy literature and open new pathways for future research on creativity in the systemic psychotherapy space.
