Thesis (D.A.)--Idaho State University, 2023.
This Doctor of Arts dissertation addresses the use of drawing as a tool to facilitate life science education and research. The literature review addresses frameworks of drawing-to-learn and Professional Vision which guided the design and implementation of the research and education experiences. A result of this dissertation work is a manuscript addressing the use of drawing to develop Professional Vision in an undergraduate herpetology course. Teaching internships associated with the research include employing drawing in the herpetology lab, designing and teaching a novel biological illustration course, and workshops and other experiences that address using drawing for observation and communication and disseminating the information to educators. A practitioner's manuscript provides useful information for designing and using drawing for learning in life science education experiences. The use of illustration as a science communication tool is addressed in the description of meaningful illustration experiences.
