A few Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have integrated mobile technology-based solutions to assist in achieving sustainability or campus engagement-based goals, but none of the available mobile applications have been studied to determine effectiveness in design to meet specified outcomes. This gap created an opportunity for a new application to be designed and developed to investigate whether or not a mobile application can prove to be a valuable tool in supporting HEIs with sustainability goals. The 'SustainCofC' project links social science methods with best practices in mobile application development. The project reviewed current sustainability mobile applications in use at HEIs, documented College of Charleston's (CofC) specific sustainability goals and designed an application to address CofC's specific requirements. To review and evaluate active HEI sustainability applications effectively, I created the CSMARS quantitative rubric. After the final design of 'SustainCofC' was approved by CofC stakeholders, it too was evaluated using the CSMARS rubric. CofC's impact from adopting and deploying this application will be felt instantly across the institution and its peers, as 'SustainCofC' opens opportunities for further research exploring technology's role in supporting HEIs sustainability goals and their students.
