Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northcentral University, 2021.
The problem addressed in this research study was how student-athletes are not properly prepared and supported by the athletic department and institution to transition from college into the career workforce. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the current lived experiences of student-athletes from a Northern California, NCAA Division II University toward the development, preparation, support, knowledge, and overall confidence in their abilities to transition into the career workforce. The theoretical framework was based on student-athletes perceptions regarding their development and transitioning support. The selection of semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions and face-to-face interactions were used to obtain information on real-life experiences from the student-athletes. The population and sample were obtained from multiple men's and women's sports teams, that were student-athletes in their senior year of competition. Through purposeful sampling methods, nine participants were selected. The use of the Quirkos 2.0 software was used to review, code, analyze, and organize the data for transcription. Results addressed research questions regarding experience, perception, and support of student-athletes. The findings created several themes of workforce development perception, transitional support, available resources, communication, future possibilities, lack of consistency, and internship opportunities. Implications in the study provided an in-depth look into the lived experiences of student-athletes as their responses were guided by the two research questions. Recommendations yielded the following areas of establishing a communications plan earlier, providing more available resources, and providing more mentorship/internship opportunities. Recommendation for future research demonstrated a need for consistent communication and early identification of support for workforce development.
