Thesis (M.Sc.)--University of London, Chelsea College (United Kingdom), 1961.
The propagation characteristics of elastic waves in anisotropic solid media are developed from classical elasticity theory and effects of various physical constraints considered. After questioning the validity of the classical approach, plane wave solutions to the wave equations are found for the simple isotropic case, followed by a discussion of plane wave propagation in aeolotropic solids with theoretical and experimental results for media of simple symmetries. Propagation is also considered forpolycrystalline aggregates. Effects of mechanical forces, inparticular pressure and uniaxial stresses, on wave propagation in anisotropic solids are described in terms of finite deformation theory. Experimental temperature variations of attenuation and velocity of elastic waves in anisotropic media are reviewed together with theoretical interpretations. The effects of external magnetic fields on elastic wave propagation are given with particular reference to magneto-acoustic interactions in metal single crystals at low temperatures. In the final summation, existing ultrasonic techniques for evaluating internal stresses in solids are criticized; suggestions for further work and an appendix on internal friction are included.
